How to Use Microsoft FrontPage

Introduction to Microsoft FrontPage

Microsoft FrontPage is a commercial WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) Site Creation Software. It can be used to create web sites with relative ease and minimum technical knowledge (no HTML programming required). The Solutionz-eWeb servers are compatible with FrontPage, which can be used to make changes directly on the server.

Important note: Microsoft FrontPage is now obsolete and is no longer supported by Microsoft since 2006. It has been replaced by a new software product line called Expression Web. Although you can still use FrontPage on our servers, its use is not recommended, and we will not provide support for it.

Initial Configuration

Before using FrontPage, you must install the FrontPage extensions on the server in order to guarantee the proper functioning of the software. FrontPage extensions are not installed by default. In the cPanel's Advanced section, open the FrontPage Extensions option and follow the on-screen instructions to install them.

Note that FrontPage will add several folders and files in your account (such as _vti_log, _vti_pvt, .htaccess, and others); these are necessary for FrontPage to run properly, and should not be removed manually.

You can remove (or reinstall) FrontPage extensions by using this same cPanel page. Note, however, that by removing or reinstalling FrontPage extensions, important configuration files will be modify, and you will lose the following changes to your site:

  • all web redirection configured through the cPanel
  • all secured web access to a protected folder

Using FrontPage 2003 and Publishing Your Site

To publish your site with FrontPage, click on File - Publish and type your domain name. Select Frontpage Extensions as your publication method. Enter your cPanel username and password when prompted.

That's it! Your site should now begin to transfer.
